Christmas Break is Over: Now What?

T’was the season for hot chocolate, and ugly sweaters too,

The campus was silent, all students home to renew.

Christmas celebrations entered each home and heart,

Bellies full of sugar cookies, pepper nuts, and tarts.

All cheered in the new year, resolutions firm,

Now ’tis the season for the 2018 Interterm.

Christmas break was such a wonderful time. It was so nice to be back home with my family and old friends, and I tried to make the most of every moment there. A large portion of my break, though, was spent working to earn some extra money before heading back to my real job: school. I was very thankful for the opportunity to work while home, although it cut out time that I could have spent with family.

When I first got home, I missed the atmosphere here at Tabor. I missed my friends and just being surrounded with people my age. As time wore on, though, I realized how much I loved being with my family over the holidays in particular. Getting together with my extended family to celebrate my Savior’s birth was great, laughing and playing Mexican Train dominoes late into the night. Even though I’m the youngest on both sides of my family, I felt treated a little more as an adult now that I’ve left the nest.

Another highlight of the three weeks of Christmas break was reconnecting with more old high school friends. I was quick to realize how different our college experiences are, and as they would tell me of their current lives, I knew that I wouldn’t trade my Tabor life for any other. The drama that they were telling me about took me back to high school. I am unbelievably thankful for the absence of the drama for me at Tabor that used to be normal.

Now that the break is over, I’ve started Interterm, a concept foreign to me before attending Tabor. Interterm is a period of about three and a half weeks during which students take a single class Monday-Friday for three hours per day. My first day in the class dragged on, and I was resolved to hating it. Homework was lengthy nearly every day. Thankfully, though, the entire afternoon is free every day to dedicate to the assignments. Now, as I push through daily, it’s getting better. By the end, I will have finished an entire class that would normally take a whole semester.

The break was a great transitional period to prepare myself for the next step in my college life. I’m excited to see what the rest of this Interterm has in store. Now to put away my ugly Christmas sweaters and gear up for whatever comes next!
