“The Week of Business” returns Oct. 24-27

The Week of Business has become a signature event for Tabor’s business department, featuring three nights of guest lecturers, activities for business majors, and a Career Fair on the final day. It is designed to allow business students to network with regional, national, and global companies. Each speaker(s) for the three evening events is set to provide a firsthand glimpse at the industry from different perspectives. Each of the evening lectures is open to the public and will begin at 7 p.m.

Nearly all aspects of the event are decided and scheduled by the Entrepreneurship Experience Class, which has 11 students this fall.

Dr. Melinda Rangel, Marvin Sellberg Professor of Business Administration & Entrepreneurship, is encouraged by her students and the care they put into making it a well-rounded event.

“I love having students plan the event because they are making decisions based on their audience, other business students,” Rangel said. “They choose speakers, food, and activities that resonate with their peers. This helps them work as a team, collaborate, make decisions, offer suggestions and solutions, and present their ideas. These are all essential skills in the workplace.”

The Career Fair will feature nearly 30 regional businesses, offering students a variety of fields to explore in their area of expertise.

“It’s huge for us to be able to interact with these business owners and employers and to capitalize off of their life experience,” said Laura Savage, a student in the Entrepreneurship Experience class. “We’re bringing in different people with experience in different fields.”

“The Career Fair has provided many internship and job opportunities for our students,” Rangel said. “These businesses have real opportunities and are not just mock interviews. This is great for our students and Tabor as a whole. Many businesses comment on how prepared our students are and the quality of our facilities.”

Damon Carson is the owner and president of repurposedMATERIALS.  Their strategy for landfill diversion is called “repurposing”.  Damon, and his “repurposing” concept, have been featured in such media outlets as the Chicago Tribune, CNN Online, the Dallas Morning News, and in Oprah Winfrey’s magazine amongst many others. repurposedMATERIALS is Damon’s second foray into the waste stream of America albeit with a very different and unique business model.  Several years back, he sold a garbage company he had co-owned in the Colorado ski resorts of Vail and Breckenridge to Waste Management. His company currently has locations in Denver, Chicago, and Atlanta.
