Klanderud To Give Kyle Lecture at Tabor

Klanderud JessicaHILLSBORO, Kan. – Tabor College’s annual Dr. Richard G. Kyle Faculty Lecture will take place at 7 p.m., April 19, in the Franz Family Heritage Lobby of the Shari Flaming Center for the Arts.

Titled “Freedom Corner and the Modern Civil Rights Movement, 1950-1968,”Jessica Klanderud, assistant professor of history, will deliver the lecture.

Klanderud’s talk will emphasize the street politics that encouraged African Americans’ ideas of freedom and equality.

“I am really excited and thankful to be able to present to Tabor and the Tabor community about my research and work,” said Klanderud. “I enjoy questions from the community and hope they can make it.”

Her curiosity started many years ago when she wanted to learn more about how civil rights actions got started. The day-to-day lives that encouraged such actions are rarely heard about.

Klanderud’s research comes from her book manuscript “Struggle for the Street: Civil Rights in African American Pittsburgh, from a Place to a Movement.” Her work has been accepted by University of North Carolina Press for their Justice Power and Politics series.

“This year was the stiffest competition I have ever experienced,” said Frank Johnson, vice president of academic affairs. “There were multiple superb entries and I encourage all students and people from the community to attend. I am very grateful for Bill and Joyce Loewen, whose generosity makes this event possible.”

The first lecture was given in 1997 by Kyle himself, and in 2004 the series was named in his honor. This event was founded to encourage scholarship and to recognize the work of a Tabor College faculty member.
