HILLSBORO, Kan. – Northwestern College theater professor, Robert Hubbard, is coming to campus to perform his new fringe show “How Helicopters Figure in my Dreams” at 7:30 p.m. Thurs., March 5 in the Tabor College Chapel in the H.W. Lohrenz building. The event is free and open to the public.
In his performance, Hubbard reveals how a sensitive theater kid from the Midwest transformed into an unrepentant, pro-football fanatic.
“The show describes a true-life story of how a mutual love for the Denver Broncos and their exciting new quarterback named John Elway forges a bond between father and son,” Hubbard said. “In this comic and tender autobiographical monologue, I search for redemption in broken relationships, losing seasons and one transcendent Sunday in San Diego.”
An avid Broncos football fan, Hubbard’s father struggled with alcoholism nearly all his life. During Hubbard’s teenage years, his father drifted in and out of homelessness. With little personal contact over this lost time, the teenage Hubbard developed an irrational yet meaningful connection between his absent father and Elway.
Hubbard has performed solo shows at high schools, colleges, churches, community centers and Fringe Festivals across the country, including places like: New York City, Baltimore, Kansas City, Minneapolis and Sioux Falls.
When not performing, Hubbard chairs the theater department at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa. An experienced actor, director and playwright, he holds a doctorate in theater from Bowling Green State University. Hubbard grew up in North Dakota, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in theater and English from Minot State University.
