Tabor Adds Africa Trip to Interterm Options

Schellert in AfricaHILLSBORO, Kan. – Tabor College is taking students to Africa this January. Arden Schellert assistant professor of social work is leading the class and welcomes Tabor alumni and friends to join the group.

Schellert grew up in Africa and looks forward to sharing this experience with students.

“This trip truly a once in a lifetime opportunity,” Schellert said. “We’ll be visiting with experts and seeing locations that will give students a real picture of both the beauty and the suffering that is such a striking part of life in Africa.”

The trip will begin in Dar es Salaam, a very urban and modern part of the continent. Trips are planned to visit several locations in Tanzania including Lake Victoria, a small fishing village, tranquil beaches, spectacular cliffs. Planned experiences also include a jeep ride through the Serengeti, a hike to a volcanic crater, time at local markets with vendors and a visit to the ancient slave trading center of Zanzibar Island.

Another special learning opportunity will be a visit to Ndolage Hospital. This is a world-class hospital set in a remote, rural area and is the site where HIV/AIDS was first discovered. Other development locations include World Vision and USAID program locations.

The cost of the three-week trip is $3,000 and includes air travel.

Tabor offers several opportunities for students to travel during January interterm classes as part of a multicultural awareness requirement. In 2017 students will travel to Great Britain, Israel, Africa and within the U.S. to assist with disaster relief efforts.

“Students at Tabor have the unique opportunity to participate in several international experiences led by our faculty,” Frank Johnson vice president of academic affairs said. “We encourage every student, if able, to take advantage of this time of life to learn about other cultures and develop empathy for those with perspectives different from their own.”
