HILLSBORO, Kan. – Tabor Arts will host Nether Consort, a medieval ensemble, at 7 p.m., April 5 in the Atrium of the Shari Flaming Center of the Arts. Admission for the concert is free and the event open to the public.
“The Nether Consort specializes in a genre of music that is both delightful and relatively—and unfortunately—less familiar,” said Brad Vogel, chair of the music department at Tabor College.
Nether Consort members have a passion for playing early music. They perform primarily Renaissance music but also play compositions from the Middle Ages, Baroque and occasionally contemporary music.
“The music of the Middle Ages and Renaissance utilizes instruments that are unique in tone quality and appearance, which will be a treat for the audience,” Vogel said. “The music itself is very lively and entertaining, and the more relaxed atmosphere of the Regier Atrium will be a perfect venue for this ensemble.”
Nether Consort members and their instruments include David Brody, lute and guitar; Katherine Bradfield, recorders; David Gray, recorders and baroque bassoon; Isabel Hendry, recorders, viola da gamba and Glastonbury pipe; Tracy Hoover, violas da gamba; William LeVine, violas da gamba and hurdy-gurdy; Carter Tholl, soprano vocal and viola da gamba; and Kathy Wolff, recorders.
The group began in the 1970s as a recorder quartet partly inspired by participation in the Wichita State University Collegium Musicum.
The group has performed widely in Kansas including performances at Wichita State University, Southwestern College, the Chamber Music Concert series at the First Unitarian Universalist Church in Wichita, Kansas Aviation Museum, Museum of World Treasures, the opening of the WSU Biology Field Station in Viola, school and church performances and Renaissance festivals and banquets.
