Wiens was born in Hillsboro, Kan., on Feb. 28, 1919, while his father attended Tabor College. He grew up on a dairy farm in Mountain Lake, Minn., and was baptized at the age of 12, embarking on a lifelong commitment to scripture and Christlike living. He completed his undergraduate work at Mankato State in Mankato, Minn. He later finished his master’s at Stout State University in Wisconsin and doctorate at Colorado State in Greeley, Colo. He first taught at Tabor College in 1949 and served as the chairman of the education department. He got Tabor’s application for teacher certification approved in 1958 and later served as registrar and dean of the college. He also taught at Rutgers University in Piscataway, N.J., Moravian College in Bethlehem, Penn., and Penn State University in State College, P.A. After retiring in 1982, he and his wife Mary (Wall) moved back to Hillsboro and attended and served at Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church.
