Thiessen was born to Carl Dean & Lola Eleanor Thiessen on Oct. 30, 1956, in Tulsa, Okla. For the first eight years of his life, he lived with his parents and sister, Elaine on his grandparents’ “homestead” – the dairy farm where his father had lived and worked since 1935, located near Owasso, Okla. The family worshipped at the Mennonite Brethren Church located at the “German Corner” between Owasso and Collinsville. After graduating from Claremore High School in 1974, he received a music scholarship to attend Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kan.
