Larry Nikkel to speak at Center for Mennonite Brethren Studies luncheon

CMBS Poster 15 noon lectureHILLSBORO, Kan. – The Center for Mennonite Brethren Studies is hosting a lecture at noon on April 7 in the Library Conference Room, Tabor College campus in Hillsboro, Kan.

Former Tabor College president Larry Nikkel will be presenting on the topic, “Mennonite Brethren in the Military: Retreat or Re-engagement?”

At the 2014 U.S. Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches convention, a revised Article 13 of the Confession of Faith was adopted. The Article deals with the issue of love, nonresistance and military participation. Some people have seen the revision as a retreat from our historical position while others have applauded the revision as a step forward.

Nikkel, chair of the national MB Board of Faith and Life, will present the context for why the Article was reviewed and revised, plus provide his perspective on the potential for effectiveness for revisions.

Peggy Goertzen, CMBS director, says, “This is an opportunity to hear Nikkel’s insights into this challenging process.”

Nikkel has spent most of his life in inter-Mennonite circles. His career has included 26 years at Prairie View, five years in Mennonite Health Services and 10 years in the presidency of Tabor College.
